It is one of the pioneering museums in the region to specialise in pan-Asian cultures and civilisations. The museum specialises in the material history of China, Southeast Asia, South Asia and West Asia, from which the diverse ethnic groups of Singapore trace their ancestry. The museum first opened at the Old Tao Nan School building on 22 April  at Armenian Street, with exhibits largely centred on Chinese civilisation.

The former Empress Place Building is one of the architectural treasures in the Empress Place civic area overlooking the Singapore River. It was completed in and had originally been planned to be used as a courthouse but instead functioned as government offices until the late s. Subsequent restorations and extensions have stayed faithful to the original neoclassical Palladian architectural style.
This is a really nice place to visit if you are in the area. There is a lot to cover with displays covering Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam in the region. A very old and historical museum with a very appealing architecture.

Constructed by Indian convicts, the building once housed key administrative departments. One of Singapore's largest and most impressive museums, the Asian Civilisations Museum has seven galleries showcasing more than 2, artefacts from the civilisations of China, South-East Asia, South Asia and West Asia. The first floor of galleries charts the story of trade across the region, while the second floor presents systems of faith and belief and the third features materials and design used in Chinese ceramics from the Han to the Qing dynasty.
