For many years a traditional bastion of conservatism, like its Southern neighbors, North Carolina has changed considerably in recent years in terms of its attitudes toward and popularity among gays and lesbians. As younger, more tolerant, and more politically progressive residents continue to move here, a number of communities have developed increasingly visible LGBT communities.
Greensboro, North Carolina's third most populous city, is the star of the thriving metropolitan area known as the Piedmont Triad, which also includes the towns of High Point and Winston-Salem. For a lot of people who grow up in Greensboro, the city is known as Greens-boring. But for people who grew up in the surrounding conservative southern town, Greensboro is more like Gaysboro--diverse and accepting, with quite a few people out and proud.
This whole region of North Carolina from Asheville to Raleigh has many fine visual arts galleries, sculpure and crafts outlets. Winston-Salem, a gracious southern city where tabacco was once king, has impressive art museums, a symphony orchestrathe April River Run Film Festivalthe internationally respected University of North Carolina School of the Artsand the world-famous National Black Theatre Festival that takes place each August. Greensboro, which became a textiles as well as tobacco center after the Civil War, has experienced a dramatic increase in downtown nightlife with numerous nightclubs, bars and restaurants. These cities have tight-knit gay communities, but there are fewer gay clubs here these days.

She said a year-old man, Garry Joseph Gupton, has now been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the beating last Sunday.
