A round-the-clock Queens prostitution ring that got its clients through racy ads on Craigslist has been busted by state authorities — the latest in a string of crimes linked to the controversial Web site. The Ozone Park-based outfit, Room Service Entertainment, was so hush-hush that it dealt with its clients in code, according to a count indictment unsealed yesterday.
Many advocates of Web freedom were convinced that Craigslist hadn't really surrendered. They were certain that the website only appeared to have thrown in the towel last week in its long-running legal battle over the ads that appeared on its pages under the heading "adult services. Surely there had to be another chapter in the contest between one of the most popular sites on the Web and a cadre of some 40 states attorneys general who had loudly demanded that Craigslist remove a category for ads that they said were nothing more than fronts for prostitution?
The "adult services" listing on Craiglist was removed late Friday from its U. Craigslist did not announce the move and its blog was not updated as of Saturday morning. Craigslist did not immediately respond to e-mail and voice mail messages seeking comment.
Craigslist is scrapping "erotic services" ads a month after a Boston medical student allegedly murdered a woman whose listing he found on the Web site. The embattled classified advertising site will replace the section with an "adult" category monitored by employees, the Illinois Attorney General said Wednesday.
